The Institute

The Institute of Agricultural Sciences aims:

TO UNDERSTAND plants, animals and the environmental factors interacting with them from the molecular to the ecosystem, to the global scale

TO INVESTIGATE agro-ecosystems in their diversity, their response to changing environmental factors and their effects on the environment

TO CONTRIBUTE to the development of sustainable agriculture by using results from fundamental and applied research

TO FOSTER the future competences in plant, animal and agro-ecosystem sciences by excellent teaching and education

The tasks in agricultural research today and in the future can no longer be solved by disciplinary approaches or natural science-based methods alone.

Agricultural production systems are closely related to other systems such as environmental, societal and political systems and are thus highly complex.

The demand by the public with respect to the availability of a secure and healthy food supply on the one side and to the sustainable use of our resources on the other, is creating a variety of new challenges that can only be addressed through interdisciplinary approaches.

Meeting global challenges and food security require excellent graduates with a solid disciplinary basis and a comprehensive understanding of plants, animals and the manifold relationships occurring within agricultural systems and their interactions within the whole World Food System.

The close link between basic plant and livestock research allows designing innovative solutions to actual and future problems.
